A skunk/ raccoon hunt that begins at 9:30p.m. is not beneficial to getting our family to bed at a decent hour, especially on a school night. The ironic part is that as Glen and I were about to walk in to the Crane's house to get the girls, Glen ask how the whole skunk saga was going. As I replied I turned and saw a skunk at the cat food pans! I was about to tell him I was hoping it was over or near the end because my dad had got one two Sundays ago and then trapped another one in a pipe again this past Thursday.
Yet it continues.
Now that Glen has taken a few shots he is a little more intrigued about the whole thing. We hurried in to the house and I got the gun, loaded and everything. I was going to take a shot but decided that maybe Glen should have a try since he had been missing out on all of the action. After he shot at the skunk and missed, even though he thought he got it for a minute. We waited around a little bit, hoping the skunk might come back and getting the girls to clean up so we could go home. While waiting though he saw two very good sized raccoons at the cat plates. As he opened the door to shoot at them, the noise in the house scared them away. We waited a little longer and Glen went outside to see if he could see any of the critters. As he went over by the garage and garden he could here something in the corn. I, by that time came out to check on him. Once he told me about the noise in the corn I told him to shoot them if he saw them, because raccoons will wreak havoc on the corn and strip the cobs if they get a chance.
After I told him that I headed in to the house to get a radio. One of the tricks I have heard to deter raccoons is to play a radio at night because the voices will help keep them at bay.
While I was doing this Glen, got a good shot at one. Yet again, he was surprised he didn't drop it because he thought he got it between the eyes, but he didn't and it ran away. He went over to see if there was any trace that he might have gotten it, and eventually found a blood trail. I came out and set up the radio and then helped him follow the trail. It went through the corn rows to the top of the garden and then veered out under the fence. Then it went across the lane and in front of the neighbors pasture. It went in to the pasture and then back out under the fence. This is were we left the trail to come back to tomorrow, because it was just getting to late for our school girl.
So tomorrow we will pick up the trail and see what we can find. It seems we are a war with all sorts of critters lately: skunks , mice(at our house), and now raccoons. May heaven help us all!
Yet it continues.
