Sweet 16 during quarantine

May 18th,  Lilly turned 16. I had contemplated several things we could do for her birthday but thoughts and action didn’t meet up well this year.  It was mostly a normal day but there was a bunch of celebrating at the end!
We made sure we were home in time for the friends who dropped by at 1800. We also tried to have mini cheesecakes for them but only half got them because we were slow.  The funniest thing happened with Lilly and her friend Maddie. They both like the red lobster cheesy garlic biscuits that you can get in a premix box. Lilly had been going to give Maddie some for her birthday but hadn’t gotten around to making them yet. Maddie was coming over so Lilly decided she would make some to give to her for her belated present. When Maddie got to our house she handed Lilly a plate of cheesy garlic biscuits and and Lilly handed her a plate of cheesy garlic biscuits. Everyone thought it was hilarious.
They had a mostly social distant gathering in our front lawn.
After friends left we went to dinner at Zupas. We were the only non workers in the store and it looked like it was just about  close. We could have stayed and eaten in the restaurant but the kids didn’t like being the only ones in the store. We got everything to go and went home and ate on our new concrete. For dessert Lilly decided we should get Hawaiian style snow comes from the snow cone shack down the road. We ate them in the back of the truck and climbed trees. Then we had a glow stick party in the house before going to bed. I think it was a good celebration for yellow phase of quarantine.

A few things about Lilly at sixteen- she  passed all of her classes for fourth quarter. I know what things looked like with a month left in the quarter and to see the difference from then to her report card was impressive. There was some major digging to get herself out of the whole she was in.
She was voted most promising female sophomore at the year end Drama club social
She got an early birthday present by finding out she made it in to the Music Dance Theater class she auditioned for! She is so excited!
She just got a job at a flower shop answering phones and cleaning. It has its perks for me because she brings home flowers they are throwing out and they make my counter or table pretty for a few extra days!
She just got her learners permit with a bit of a shove from me. ;) She is getting the hang of driving and usually asks to do it whenever we are going somewhere....except if it involves the freeway or canyons. She’ll get there though.

She just got her hair cut to this fun length.

She loves to tease her siblings.
She knows a lot about popular plays and pop culture and really likes Queer Eye, Star Wars Rebels, Good Omins, Avatar the last Airbender, some political show on Netflix I forgot the name of, and is excited for Hamilton to come out on Disney Plus.
She’s getting really good at making crème brûlée and meringues.
She was really excited to go on our trip to New York, that she gets to keep building excitement for because it has been postponed because of COVID.
She wants things fair and just for everyone.
She’s a great gal and we are so happy she made us parents sixteen years ago. We have learned and continue to learn so much from her. Love you Lilly.

She is so beautiful and sounds delightful. She is so lucky to have your red hair! I married a red-head in the hopes...but maybe my grandchildren will be the lucky ones.

What a great birthday celebration. Your pictures of playing with the glow sticks were so much fun! And congratulations on having new concrete! That is a big project to have done.

I agree with my sister about the glow sticks. Those photos are the best. Lily sounds like the kind of girl anybody would want to be friends with. I know I do. What a great family you guys have. 2020 is going to be remembered as a weird time for birthday parties. I'm so glad as you have the cheesy garlic biscuits to remember.

L is for the way...

I watched this video and it sealed the deal on this post. I have all sorts of things I could write about, but this has been at the front of my mind for a while. I have really been affected this past year by the divorces of two different couples I know. Not that, I haven't known any one before that has gotten divorced. These have just hit closer to home. One of them is Glen's boss, and Glen has worked with him lately. (This is not the norm. He can go months with out seeing him. He just goes in to work, sees what he's doing that night and goes out.) In working with him, they have talked about stuff and something he said to Glen has really made me think. I wasn't there but it was something to the extent of, "You guys are so lucky, because you love each other, just really love each other." My first thought to this was- yes, yes we do. Then I thought how sad that he and not every married couple have that. The just of all of this rambling is that I love my ...

My cup with blessings overflows

I am trying to get back in the habit of blogging. Before I go to bed, even though I should be in bed here are blessings from this week. I don’t know it I will remember them all there were so many.  Being home to attend church with our ward.  Talks from two sister in our ward, Louisa Jones who is a brand new young woman and Holly Draney who is the Primary President, on Sister Kristin Yee’s conference talk, that complimented each other well.  They reminded me that God is in the details and even when mistakes are made he can use it to help us learn and bless us. Louisa talked about how she was mad when her parents decided they should move a few years ago but Heavely Father has made it work out. Holly brought up the definitions of the words possibility and joy. She also talked about repairing quilts that had things happen to them. Also a talk from Matt Reeves about the power of the priesthood and how it has blessed his life and has preserved his life.  A great less...

Head to the hills- July 7-14

Good things from this week were- Getting dirt to fill the planter box Daryl made for Grandpa Richins. It’s ready for him to use now!  Getting ready for girls camp. Watching Lucy play volleyball in a tournament at UVU with high school team girls. It’s crazy that is her last one as a high school player.  Eating dinner on the roof and watching the sunset. Girls camp, even the one bad part.  Showering after girls camp Sunday dinner at Larry and Janene's and playing with the whip These cool plants were at the nursery we got soil from. I think I might want some in my yard.  Lucy played in a volleyball tournament at UVU with the high school team.  Lucy thought eating on the roof would be a good idea one night so we could watch the sunset better. She was right. Though Ruth but mostly Beth got pretty comfortable exploring up there. My mom safety barometer went quite high till they got down.  The Oquirrh Mountain temple fit right between the trees for a perfect view....
