In these small hours

Wow, what a week. It was full in the best kinds of ways. There was all kinds of regular stuff and a bunch of not regular stuff that was like icing on the cake.

Monday was Janae’s birthday. Glen and the older girls celebrated with her on Tuesday by going out to see the Black Widow movie. Lilly also started Ag camp. That’s a deceiving name because it was four days of  learning basics for her Vet Assisting class she will be taking the last part of her senior year. They did observed surgery’s two days and had two days of classroom instruction where the teacher’s dog and kittens roam around. She really liked it.

The best part of Monday was meeting at Creekside park in Alpine for a picnic dinner and visiting with the Wimmers plus more-including Willa and Wyatt, Mariah and Buddy Keller, M’Li, Uncle Fred and Marj, Azya Ladd and Larry and Janene. I have no pictures, you’ll have to refer to Heather’s blog. It was so great.

Buddy is the cutest thing ever and so happy. He has the most beautiful mother that makes motherhood and life look glamours and fun and like a complete breeze.(I think it is really nice that people can do that because it is not a talent of mine.) Uncle Fred told me about his plane that will hopefully be done in the next year. It sounds like an amazing and terrifying experience to build a plane and take it on its maiden flight. Azya told me about her work which is so cool and technical and completely over my head. It was fun to hear Azya and Marj talk about differences of different languages and how things translate. I visited with Marj, and Janene and Heather, who are all so good. It was just a really great night.

Tuesday involved cavities being filled for the kids, Glen and the older girls celebrating Janae’s birthday with her, a friend’s birthday party for Daryl, a friend get together for Lilly and a sleepover for all the kids but Daryl. Lilly stayed with a friend who’s family went out of town so she “wouldn’t be murdered in her sleep.” (Yes, it is one of her theater friends) The other kids stayed with Jed’s family. Daryl was suppose too but had a little too much sun and not enough water at the birthday party so he wasn’t up for it that night.

Wednesday, Daryl was  much improved and got to spend most of the day plus that night with Jed’s boys. Lucy worked for Grandma Egbert with Ta and Ruth and Beth spent most of the day with cousins until gymnastics. Lilly and I got our hair trimmed. I stayed the night with Evelyn and had my last gathering class of the semester. It was really good. Going back to school has been one of the hardest most rewarding things I have done.

Thursday Lilly, Lucy, Glen and I went to Logan to see the play Souvenir. Larry and Janene saw it and highly recommended it. The three younger kids got to have a sleepover with Grandma and Grandpa Egbert. Souvenir was really interesting and gave me a lot to think about. It is a play about the relationship between mediocre accompanist and an Opera singer. The Opera singer is a socialite in New York who has no pitch or tone. What she thinks she sounds like and what she actually sounds like are not the same thing. It’s based on a true story. Some of the main questions I am still thinking about from it are- does having money give you the ability do whatever you want even if you have no real ability  at it?, Does wealth give you confidence and friends who will support you even to a fault if it’s for a charitable cause?, should you try to stop someone from publicly humiliating themself?

After getting home late Thursday night from Logan, Lilly and her friends had a sunrise Olympic opening games get together at our house. They got on the roof to watch the sunrise, got to see team USA come in on the parade of nations and played games and had waffles. Luckily they weren’t too intent on watching all of the opening ceremonies because we had trouble streaming it. Darn those major networks.  They had a great time being together which was most important.

The younger kids got to watch part of the Pioneer Day parade and eat breakfast in Evelyn’s front room, and spent most of the day playing with Joe’s kids.  It’s fun to see my kids get to participate in the same traditions with Evelyn as I did.

Saturday, we drove to Provo Canyon and after failing get ahold of our friends we were going to hike with we parked at Stewart Falls trail head by Aspen Grove and headed to find other hikers setting out on the GTMH. This hike is a yearly tradition our friends family and extended family has done for 50 years or more. It’s a hike up the south side of Timpanogas to the Provo Cirque. You start out on the Stewart falls trail and then take a deer trail, to trek up the mountain.

We weren’t sure if we would all make it to the top but had decided we would take breaks when needed and go as far as we could. Glen and I were pleasantly surprised that we all made it all the way. There were rough patches, some tears, a lot of wanting to quit, a lot of breaks and snacks. Even Ruth and Beth hiked all of it.  We were so proud of all the kids.  It was mentally and physically demanding and they worked through it and did it.

Sunday we had a memorable sacrament meeting. A missionary who had been serving in Arizona returned and was reporting on his service. The microphone system wasn’t working well in the chapel making it hard to hear the already soft spoken young man.  Then the speaker started changing color and passed out mid talk. Luckily our former Bishop is a doctor and there was a nurse in the audience. They helped calm the audience. The speaker got up after a few minutes and started to finish his talk when he passed out again. This time the bishopric helped ease him to the ground. He was out longer, so the bishop and Stake president spoke to finish the meeting.  Before he passed out he was telling miracles he had during his service.  It was a great lead in to our relief society lesson which was on Elder Rasband’s talk- “Behold, I Am a God of  Miracles.”  It was a really great lesson. Our teacher talked about a time her sister was saved because her dad listened to the  Spirit when it told him to put a life jacket on her. Just after he did that the sister ran in to something in the water and the life  jacket saved her from major injury or death.

I talked about a time at Lake Powell where I had wanted a specific miracle to happen but it didn’t. Looking back I can see now that we got a miracle. It wasn’t what I wanted but it was just as wonderful.

It was a good reminder to look for the little miracles in my life more often and write them down.

I'm a big fan of small miracles--and slow ones also--and even delayed miracles. Lilly's Ag Camp sounds so cool. That's an opportunity I would jumpto get at any age. Evennow. Janae's birthday sounds fun. Also the hike. Anytime a person mentions my daughter, predictably, that part of the post becomes my favorite.

California here we come

July 15-19  Early Monday morning we went to the Provo airport to head to John Wayne airport then down to San Diego to celebrate Larry and Janene's 50th wedding anniversary. We met up with everyone but Josh and his girlfriend, Amberlee in Provo. They left earlier and drove so they could visit her family as well. My dad is a bit John Wayne fan so we had to take a picture with The Duke at his airport for him.  Once we had our luggage, rental van and food in our bellies we had to get sand between our toes and salt water at least on our feet. We ate at a fun little place in San Clemente called Cafe Rae. It was really little. Our group of nine took up about half their seats. It was really good food and they had great hospitality.  Our next stop was the USS Midway in San Diego. Larry had talked about visiting this and the Saint Mary for a long time. It was one of the main reasons we went to San Diego. It was nice to make it happen. I am not really in to military stuff but it was...

My cup with blessings overflows

I am trying to get back in the habit of blogging. Before I go to bed, even though I should be in bed here are blessings from this week. I don’t know it I will remember them all there were so many.  Being home to attend church with our ward.  Talks from two sister in our ward, Louisa Jones who is a brand new young woman and Holly Draney who is the Primary President, on Sister Kristin Yee’s conference talk, that complimented each other well.  They reminded me that God is in the details and even when mistakes are made he can use it to help us learn and bless us. Louisa talked about how she was mad when her parents decided they should move a few years ago but Heavely Father has made it work out. Holly brought up the definitions of the words possibility and joy. She also talked about repairing quilts that had things happen to them. Also a talk from Matt Reeves about the power of the priesthood and how it has blessed his life and has preserved his life.  A great less...

Conversations with Lucy

Lucy-" Mom, Do you know what you can't do?" Mom-"No, what?" Lucy-" You can't put root beer in the microwave. You can't put it in the microwave or else it will explode." Mom- " Is that right?" Lucy- " Yeah, and do you know what else you can't do, you can't put candy in the microwave or else it will explode too. Yeah!"
