Our 'four things'

Since both Heather and Paige quickly made comments wondering about the "four things" and I have neglected to write about them previously. I thought I would explain them.
Our four things is what we came up with for our family economy or system. We came up with it a year or more ago. I had been reading articles from Richard and Linda Eyre in the newspaper about their family economy and how they structured stuff to get their kids to help around the house and teach them responsibility and what not. We had also gone to this frugal living workshop. One of the classes we want to was about a system a couple created and was just starting to market called work stars or rock stars or something.
We tried both of these systems out but were not consistent with them and they got complicated and just didn't work for us. So we came up with our own thing. We aren't perfect at it. It gives us a baseline and something to work towards.
The four things are the four things/areas that we think should get done everyday before screen time or playing with friends or extras that the kids might want to do to earn money. If you haven't done your four things you don't have other privileges.
The four things are something physically active, something spiritual, something to better yourself/increase your knowledge  and something to help around the house.
We have varying standards for the various ages of children we have and Beth isn't old enough yet. We try to be pretty flexible with requirements but not too easy. They are things that should take a little while to get done but not the whole day and be too burdensome.
For example 15-20 minutes is the minimum for active and spiritual for everyone over like eight. Spiritual can be reading from the standard works, church magazines or even some of the more doctrinal church books like Jesus the Christ, no more than once a week can you watch Mormon messages or church videos to make it count.
School or getting homework done usually counts for the improving your self one for the kids. The little ones we will read with or too to help them get that for them.
Helping around the house looks different for everyone also, especially with the little kids. It's mostly helping them clean up the messes they make.

We keep track of points and each thing is a point, with four possible in a day and 28 in a week for each person and usually have a few different goals we are working toward. Like last week anyone who got 25 points or more got to go out for shakes. When Star Wars came out last year the girls and I earned a certain number of points combined and then we got to go to the movie. The kids earned like 500 point or something over the course of a few weeks or months so they could get Minecraft on the computer.
So there you have it. I hope it makes sense.  It is rather basic but it helps us try to focus a little better and gives us a standard.
This is our chart.

So there you have it. The "four things"

Brilliant. Utterly usable. Not to complex. I love this.

I wonder if it's too late to start it with a 17-year old who just wishes I would leave him alone (forever) while keeping the sandwiches coming.

I love your four things! I'm going to rip it off. I like how it is good for everyone in the family. And you are good and fun to have them earn points when they do it.

California here we come

July 15-19  Early Monday morning we went to the Provo airport to head to John Wayne airport then down to San Diego to celebrate Larry and Janene's 50th wedding anniversary. We met up with everyone but Josh and his girlfriend, Amberlee in Provo. They left earlier and drove so they could visit her family as well. My dad is a bit John Wayne fan so we had to take a picture with The Duke at his airport for him.  Once we had our luggage, rental van and food in our bellies we had to get sand between our toes and salt water at least on our feet. We ate at a fun little place in San Clemente called Cafe Rae. It was really little. Our group of nine took up about half their seats. It was really good food and they had great hospitality.  Our next stop was the USS Midway in San Diego. Larry had talked about visiting this and the Saint Mary for a long time. It was one of the main reasons we went to San Diego. It was nice to make it happen. I am not really in to military stuff but it was...

My cup with blessings overflows

I am trying to get back in the habit of blogging. Before I go to bed, even though I should be in bed here are blessings from this week. I don’t know it I will remember them all there were so many.  Being home to attend church with our ward.  Talks from two sister in our ward, Louisa Jones who is a brand new young woman and Holly Draney who is the Primary President, on Sister Kristin Yee’s conference talk, that complimented each other well.  They reminded me that God is in the details and even when mistakes are made he can use it to help us learn and bless us. Louisa talked about how she was mad when her parents decided they should move a few years ago but Heavely Father has made it work out. Holly brought up the definitions of the words possibility and joy. She also talked about repairing quilts that had things happen to them. Also a talk from Matt Reeves about the power of the priesthood and how it has blessed his life and has preserved his life.  A great less...

Head to the hills- July 7-14

Good things from this week were- Getting dirt to fill the planter box Daryl made for Grandpa Richins. It’s ready for him to use now!  Getting ready for girls camp. Watching Lucy play volleyball in a tournament at UVU with high school team girls. It’s crazy that is her last one as a high school player.  Eating dinner on the roof and watching the sunset. Girls camp, even the one bad part.  Showering after girls camp Sunday dinner at Larry and Janene's and playing with the whip These cool plants were at the nursery we got soil from. I think I might want some in my yard.  Lucy played in a volleyball tournament at UVU with the high school team.  Lucy thought eating on the roof would be a good idea one night so we could watch the sunset better. She was right. Though Ruth but mostly Beth got pretty comfortable exploring up there. My mom safety barometer went quite high till they got down.  The Oquirrh Mountain temple fit right between the trees for a perfect view....
