Jesse Egbert Obituary
Jesse Cole Egbert
1983 ~ 2017
The world became a little less bright on Tuesday October 17, 2017, as Jesse left us far too soon from injuries due to a fall at work. He was born to Aaron and Kristine Thomas Egbert on January 19, 1983. Jesse loved family. He was fun, genuine, stubborn, incredibly handsome, and had a tender heart. Jesse loved everyone, especially children. He loved being called "Uncle Jesse". He loved the family farm, the outdoors, and was very athletic. At a young age he developed a strong work ethic, working alongside his dad and brother in masonry. Jesse also had a very special bond with his Mom. At the time of his passing, he worked for Necaise & Son Masonry. They were truly family to him. Jesse married his high school sweetheart, Jodie McIntyre (later divorced). Together they had a beautiful son, Cole, who he loved very much. Despite his earthly challenges, Jesse was strong and fought hard. He was a friend to all, and touched countless lives. Specifically, his recovery family. We are grateful to all those who believed in him and helped him in his life's journey. Jesse is survived by his son Cole Egbert, parents Aaron and Kristine Egbert, brother Jeremy (Jen) Egbert, sister Lacey (Jon) Stinson, brother Zach Egbert, brother Alex Egbert, sister Katie Egbert, as well as his grandmother Joye Thomas, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceded in death by his grandparents Reid and Marian Egbert and Robert Thomas. Jesse, we love you! We already miss you so much!! We are grateful we got to see your smile and see you enjoy life again. We take comfort that you are at peace.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday October 24, 2017 at Jordan Oaks Stake Center, 8117 S Leslie Drive (3905 W.), West Jordan, Utah. There will be viewings held Monday October 23 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Home, 1007 W South Jordan Parkway (10600 S.), South Jordan, and prior to the funeral, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the church. Interment at West Jordan City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers Jesse would have wanted donations made to the Cole Egbert Donation Fund. Those may be done in person at any Wells Fargo Bank. Please reach a hand out to someone who is downtrodden. Online condolences at www.jenkins-soffe.com
Everyone gathered around for the serenity prayer

(I tend to put too much information out there. Most of this is for me and because they are details I like to know. sorry if it is TMI.)
Two months ago my cousin Jesse died. It was somewhat expected but not if that is possible. Jesse was/is the same age as me, which is very sobering. He choose a "cool party" crowd to follow in high school and after, which lead to alcohol and then drug abuse. Over the last eight years or so he overdosed at least 7 times. Several of those times the paramedics thought he was gone but gave him the counter active drug and he came back.  He had been in and out of detox and rehab several times.
Luckily the last one had seemed to stick and be working! He had been clean for almost a year. He had a seizure while working on scaffolding as a hod tender or brick mason. His co workers couldn't get to him in time and he fell breaking his neck.
Though his dad was heartbroken, he felt like this must be Jesse's time to go and felt much better about where he was in life at the time of his death than at other times. He was working hard and trying to get his life back together.
His funeral was beautiful and I thought very inclusive. A brother and sister spoke and then one of his friends from his rehab family. They didn't sugar coat who he was or the problems he had but emphasized that he was more than his addictions. That he didn't exactly choose those addictions or problems and he suffered a lot from them but that he was more than them too. He had a good heart and was a good person despite them. Several instances were shared of how he did things to help people on purpose especially if he thought they had a disadvantage. He was silly and goofy and didn't care what others thought of him.
His dad shared a couple stories before the bishop gave his remarks. One was about how Jesse had over come ego and caring about what people thought through his recovery process. That was why he was so silly and goofy and fun loving.
The other was an experience my aunt had while at the gym one day. She was exercising on an elliptical or treadmill. There were a bunch of other people there using other machines and what not. That area of the gym had windows over looking a busy road. There happened to be a police officer chasing down someone and arresting them. As the other gym members watched this they cheered and clapped that the person apprehended had gotten what he deserved and what not. My aunt just stayed quiet during it all. As it was all ending one of the other members noticed her being quiet and ask why she hadn't cheered.
She said, "There is a mother that is going to get a call she doesn't want to get." After that the other gym members were quiet.
It was a good reminder that people who make bad choices usually have family and friends that wish they wouldn't do that and love them still.
At the cemetery after the dedication of the grave my uncle had every one circle up and gather around and hold hands. Then he had his son Zac, who is in the recovery process himself, lead everyone in the serenity prayer. He wanted everyone to feel included and loved because there were a lot of Jesse's recovery family there and Jesse included everyone and that group feels on the fringes and not included.
It was a really neat thing and very fitting tribute to Jesse.

A few things I want to try and remember and apply better in life from his services are-

-We all need some kind of higher power to help us no matter what we call it.
-to love more and judge less.
- remember that people are more than their bad choices and usually have families that love them.
-tell people you love them.
- don't worry about what others think.
-be nice to people and do good.
-you never know what a person might be going through or have gone through. be kind

Wow. That is really sobering to have a cousin your same age die. And good lessons to have learned from him. Thank you for recording this and letting me read it!

California here we come

July 15-19  Early Monday morning we went to the Provo airport to head to John Wayne airport then down to San Diego to celebrate Larry and Janene's 50th wedding anniversary. We met up with everyone but Josh and his girlfriend, Amberlee in Provo. They left earlier and drove so they could visit her family as well. My dad is a bit John Wayne fan so we had to take a picture with The Duke at his airport for him.  Once we had our luggage, rental van and food in our bellies we had to get sand between our toes and salt water at least on our feet. We ate at a fun little place in San Clemente called Cafe Rae. It was really little. Our group of nine took up about half their seats. It was really good food and they had great hospitality.  Our next stop was the USS Midway in San Diego. Larry had talked about visiting this and the Saint Mary for a long time. It was one of the main reasons we went to San Diego. It was nice to make it happen. I am not really in to military stuff but it was...

My cup with blessings overflows

I am trying to get back in the habit of blogging. Before I go to bed, even though I should be in bed here are blessings from this week. I don’t know it I will remember them all there were so many.  Being home to attend church with our ward.  Talks from two sister in our ward, Louisa Jones who is a brand new young woman and Holly Draney who is the Primary President, on Sister Kristin Yee’s conference talk, that complimented each other well.  They reminded me that God is in the details and even when mistakes are made he can use it to help us learn and bless us. Louisa talked about how she was mad when her parents decided they should move a few years ago but Heavely Father has made it work out. Holly brought up the definitions of the words possibility and joy. She also talked about repairing quilts that had things happen to them. Also a talk from Matt Reeves about the power of the priesthood and how it has blessed his life and has preserved his life.  A great less...

Head to the hills- July 7-14

Good things from this week were- Getting dirt to fill the planter box Daryl made for Grandpa Richins. It’s ready for him to use now!  Getting ready for girls camp. Watching Lucy play volleyball in a tournament at UVU with high school team girls. It’s crazy that is her last one as a high school player.  Eating dinner on the roof and watching the sunset. Girls camp, even the one bad part.  Showering after girls camp Sunday dinner at Larry and Janene's and playing with the whip These cool plants were at the nursery we got soil from. I think I might want some in my yard.  Lucy played in a volleyball tournament at UVU with the high school team.  Lucy thought eating on the roof would be a good idea one night so we could watch the sunset better. She was right. Though Ruth but mostly Beth got pretty comfortable exploring up there. My mom safety barometer went quite high till they got down.  The Oquirrh Mountain temple fit right between the trees for a perfect view....
